Sustainable Communities

Module 1

My Sustainability Lens

Who am I & What Does Sustainability Mean to Me?

I am a humble resident of the NW United States, with my area of study being in Computer Science and Engineering. Generally, sustainability refers to system's ability to maintain stability on tis own for the seeable future. When it comes to my area of study, sustainability can refer to this same ability in regard to computing systems and their social, economic, and ecological impact. The Free Software Foundation is an organization that I believe contributes to sustainability in the CS space, as their work contributes to the wide availablility of a variety of tools to the public.

Exploring Local Sustainability Action

For the sake of learning more about sustainability and how I can contribute, I'll be exploring the Corvallis Sustainability Coalition (CSC) and 3 of their 12 action teams that work within their Community Sustainability Action Framework (CSC, n.d.). The goals of this framework are achieved via on-the-ground work done by the coalition's members.

The Energy Action Team

The Energy Action Team works to reduce emissions and energy consumption among other goals for the sake of a vission of energy security and net-zero greenhouse gas emissions within the community. Considering that I work with a lot of devices that use electricty (computers, servers, IoT devices, etc.), the idea of reducing my consumption and transitioning to renewable energy is quite intersting to me. Plus, if I can have my computing cake and eat it without burning fossil fuels, all the better.
